Confession #1: Confession is Good for the Soul
Any person who carries a burden in silence knows the weight of it. Biblically speaking, this little nugget appears in James 5:16: “Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.”
Although I’m using a Christian reference point, please look past the word ‘sin,’ and take this statement for what it’s worth. Carrying painful emotions such as guilt, grief, and hurt of any kind can absolutely affect us on every level. So why do we carry them? Why do we bury our hurt so deep down inside where no one can see it? Well, quite frankly, it’s painful, and as humans we are wired to avoid any kind of pain- physical or emotional- even from ourselves
As we grow in what I call our ‘humanhood,’ we are going to experience new things constantly. An observation that I have often made, is that at the time of the wounding, we see it in a very specific way and we judge it as if it’s the only perspective that will ever be. That’s pretty limiting, if you agree that when we grow, we see things differently, and NOT revisiting some of the hurtful things in our past can stop us from understanding our experiences. This is not to say we wallow and dwell on them. Moreso, we see things from a new perspective, the same way a tree would see the ground, the sky and all of its surroundings quite differently each time it reached a new height.
It is in this Spirit that my Soul Sessions were created. It’s an opportunity for personal growth and expansion, as well as a way to let go of old ideas that we thought were ‘truth,’ that are simply a perspective– one which we probably no longer have. In addition, I’ve decided that my meetup group will offer a Weekly Reflection session that I call a “Confession Session.” This is, of course, a play on words, considering my platform has been Confessions of a Spirit Messenger since 2010, but it is also based on the personal experiences I’ve had with those who I’ve met on my journey, as a soul and in a ‘messenger’ capacity.
Each week, I invite the members of my Soul Circle to join me in a sacred space to share and discuss the things they have been pushing down, holding onto and hiding- including spiritual experiences that they fear no one will believe. This is with the pure intent of laying down our burdens and give ourselves rest as well as peace. I’ve often found that when we finally say the thing we think we can’t say, we feel heard and seen in a way that allows us to let it go and move forward again. In my group, no matter what has been shared, it has been met with compassion and understanding, as we all acknowledge we are souls on a journey, finding our way through this life. In this way, we re-member and re-connect through community. As a Gen-Xer, I can vouch that during the times of the greatest stresses, this is what got us though, long before the advent of internet. It seems the more technology connects us, the more disconnected we become to one another.
If you are in the area, I encourage you to take advantage of one of my meetups. If not, I highly encourage you to reach out and book a session. This is your sign that it’s time to get ‘unstuck,’ and begin moving forward with a lighter heart and spirit!
