Spirit Messages Through Music

If you are the type of person who is musically inclined in any way, this post is for you!

*Please note, I use the terms God and Creator interchangeably in my writings and encourage you to insert your own preferred language when reading this, as it pertains to your journey.

About 9 years ago, I started waking up with songs in my head, out of nowhere. Sometimes they are songs I know. Other times it’s a snippet of a song that is vaguely familiar, and I have to do some legwork to figure out what it is. And once in a while– they are unwritten songs, that I am given a few notes of, so that I can bring them to life in the world. This blog is about one particular song, that came to answer a question.

As I lay in my bed, drifting out of a deep sleep, and adjusting to wakefulness, a song was playing in my head. It was both catchy and familiar. It was one of those songs that you sing when it plays on the radio, knowing every word without knowing how it become one with your brain without your permission.

“Hey now, Hey now- Don’t Dream It’s Over.”

Ahhhh yes… Crowded House. That fabulous 80s music came rushing back into my mind, along with all the memories of pushing play and record when songs like these came on the radio so I could listen to them any time I wanted. I knew it was a message, and it did seem to revolve around some questions I was having about where my life was going, or if it was going anywhere. I had given up on finding love. I had given up on trying to find even one sane person in the state of Florida who wasn’t going to leave for another state a year into the friendship. Nothing seemed stable. I was living in a state of suspended animation. I wasn’t dead, but it felt like I wasn’t living anymore.

I was today years old, when I finally recognized what the message was. Yes, it was a message of hope and that life wasn’t over, but it was so much more profound than that. As I listened to this song for the millionth time, putting on my makeup in the mirror, it hit me, and I was stunned. This song is a like an explanation or a conversation with God. Hear me out.

Take the first verse:

"There is freedom within
There is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead
Many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're travelling with me"

There IS freedom within and without- in Spirit Form- and when we take that tiny piece of consciousness and incarnate as humans, it’s very much like trying to capture a deluge in a paper cup! As long as we remember our connection back to Creator and all that is, we know there’s no real end of the road. We are eternal.

"Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win"

As Spirit coming into form, we dream that Oneness is ‘over.’ We feel that separation as real. The world builds a wall between us– this line is almost as if God is letting us know that it’s an temporary illusion or a dream.

"Now I'm towing my car
There's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion
But there's no proof"

As we move about the world, we become attached to it. Our worldly possessions and the pursuit to obtain and keep them become our manmade ‘gods’. Here, it’s us acknowledging that we think something is wrong, but it’s so normal to behave this way that we have no proof that’s the reason why.

"In the paper today
Tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the TV page"

We become overburdened, exhausted in our earthly pursuits, so we choose and earthly solution to that- escapism, possibly addiction and a distraction so we can feel better without changing our habits.

"Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win"

Again, God is answering us– that everything is just a temporary state, a dream. In the end, we are still whole, still Spirit, and still One.

"Now I'm walking again
To the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead
Barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and release"

At some point we realize we let ourselves become lost, and we try to find our way again. We get back in tune with that frequency we came here with, and we seek to move closer to Creator again. We recognize that even though in human form we don’t have a clear sense of where we are going, we rest in that trust that we are guided by that Higher Power, and we feel that sense of ‘liberation and release,’ as we lay down that burden of having to do it all ourselves, and to move closer to the Heart of God.

When we incarnate in human form, we are faced with something we don’t have in our true form– Free Will. We are allowed to step outside Divine Order so we can see how our choices affect this construct of reality. We see that although the connections between all living things are always present, our human identity sees only its ego and without that higher vantage point of Spirit, we do not know the effects of our seemingly innocent choices until there are consequences. When we look back on our lives, we may think of these choices as ‘mistakes,’ because of the unintended effects they had on us our others. Once again, these choices simply provide us with the experiences. The profoundness of this last verse lies in the Truth that is and has always been. Even in human form, with Free Will, the choice to live a life that is Divine Order is always on the table but we give into the temptation of our ego that we know better. We think that we have this ‘power’ to make choices is a way to rise to some sort of status that outranks the other humans at the least, and if we go even further, to outrank the wisdom of Creator.

There’s another message here that’s important. For anyone who thinks they are unredeemable due to the many awful choices you may have made in your life– you are always welcome back into the arms of God. When we get caught up in our Free Will, we start doing it all without Him. We leave God out of the process, by our choice, but by our choice we can bring it all back together again. Ultimately, the purpose of the exercise is simple. The only thing God wants, is for you to choose Him.

That’s how you break out of the Matrix.

It’s always on the table, we just have to choose it.

And that song, that realization, in an instant, took my breath away. I believe this message was meant for more than me.
